Companies should encourage old employees (55 years old) to retire, in order to give opportunities to the new generation. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, plenty of employees who are more than 55 years old must retire because of company policy; therefore, many people think that the development of a company cannot be separated from the number of young employees. The above point is certainly true; this essay will outline three reasons.

The main reason is that plenty of young employees mean that the company is infused with lots of young blood. With the development of technology, more and more new technological products have been developed. The new generation masters advanced technology and have the energy to exploit. They have learned lots of knowledge in the university; therefore it is definitely useful for the development of companies.

Another reason is that old employees cannot adapt themselves to the rapid pace. Old employees find it difficult to learn new things rapidly. With their limited physical strength, they are not capable of heavy manual work. So old employees are not a patch on young employees, it means not only intellect but also physical strength.

Last but not the least reason is that old employees have already worked for more than half of their lifetime, so they should retire to enjoy life. The old employees have already paid out too much in order to look after their families and careers. So they should pursue their hobbies

In conclusion, old employees shouldn’t continue working for themselves. Moreover, advancement of society needs a new generation.

Some people say that it is the responsibility of individuals to save money for their own care after they retire. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As the baby-boomers born in the post- WWII period exceed their retirement age, they are placing an incredibly tremendous burden on the society. The ensuing rapid depletion of social security fund and strained financial resources available have prompted many to save up sufficient money for their own good after they retire. This alternative possibility is obviously not rested on solid ground.

The retired elderly people are often labeled as being overly financially dependent. They have no access to any source of income and their expenses would culminate into quite a formidable figure. Be this as it may. it's still regarded the primary responsibilities of the government to take care of the retired in consideration of their immense contribution to our society before they reach the retirement age.

Once they leave their jobs to relish the terminal stage of their life due to their physical inferiority, the government should. beyond any doubt, assume the obligation to look after them in return for their contributions. Besides, the children of the retired are also expected to share the burden of taking care of their parents as a means of paying their due filial piety.

Some people might argue that the elderly people are gradually exhausting a large amount of social fund, posing a serious threat to the economic development andsignificantly undermining any potential endeavor to be mounted in other areas.Apparently. this could hardly be justified. The well-being of the retired people is as important as any other issues confronting any government. They are as much entitled to social welfare as any other groups of people. In fact, they constitute the majority of people who are deserving of financial support offered by the government. Pension fund is clearly not an option when it comes to downsizing government budget.

Pension scheme plays an essential role in guaranteeing the self-sufficient life of the retired people. As long as both the government and younger generation shoulder their share of responsibilities. the lives of the retired as well as the society would be much better off.

EU urges governments to raise retirement age

(BRUSSELS) - European governments need to raise the retirement age because workers are living longer and their pension systems could implode, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

The European Union's executive arm formally launched a debate already raging in several EU countries that are planning unpopular measures to bring down huge public deficits and keep their pension systems afloat.

"The number of retired people in Europe compared to those financing their pensions is forecast to double by 2060 -- the current situation is simply not sustainable," said EU social affairs commissioner Laszlo Andor.

"The choice we face is poorer pensioners, higher pension contributions or more people working more and longer," Andor said at the official presentation of a "green paper" on pensions.

Weak growth, ballooning national debt and higher unemployment "have made it harder" to make good on pension promises and "more urgent" to reform them, the commission paper says.

In the past 50 years, life expectancy in the European Union has risen by about five years and could increase by another seven years by 2060, the commission says.

At the moment there are four working-age people for every person over 65 in the 27-nation EU. That ratio will drop to two for every person over 65 by 2060, the commission says.

On average, Europeans retired at the age of 61.4 in 2008.

This compares to 65 years for workers in the United States and 70 years in Japan. In the 31-nation Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the average retirement age for men is 63.5.

Andor denied "unfounded rumours" that he was calling for the retirement age to be raised to 70 in Europe.

John Monks, general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation, said the commission's proposal was "unrealistic".

"Where is the evidence that employers want to keep older workers in work?" Monks said in a statement.

"We know the life expectation is rising but see no evidence that a higher age of retirement would be matched by employers developing workplaces which encourage older workers to remain at work," he said.

Govt denies immediate plan for retirement age rise

BEIJING - China's human resources authorities are seeking to relieve growing public concerns over the government's reported consideration to lift the retirement age in response to a financial shortage facing the country's pension fund.

"China has no immediate plan to adjust the retirement age," an unidentified official of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS) was quoted as saying on Thursday by People's Daily.

UK retirement age challenge fails

In the UK, a worker can see their employment end at the age of 65 without any redundancy payment - even if they do not want to retire.

However the judge in the case said there was a compelling case for the compulsory retirement age to rise.
